Steve Smyth

Steve SmythA veteran recording and performing artist of the metal music scene as well as a recognized, accomplished teacher and occasional columnist for Guitar World Magazine, Steve achieved journeyman status through long term touring, song-writing, and recorded work with acts including Testament, Nevermore, Dragonlord, Vicious Rumors, and most recently, Forbidden. Perhaps most notable amongst these achievements are his credits as co-author of several songs from the critically acclaimed Nevermore album This Godless Endeavor, one of the band’s highest selling albums of their career.

2009 saw Steve as the lead guitarist for reactivated Nuclear Blast Recording Artists and 80’s SF Bay Area thrashers Forbidden, having co-written the band’s comeback album Omega Wave (2010), and recently completing a world tour in support of the album in 2012. Forbidden disbanded officially in January 2013.

Steve is also a member of instrumental duo The EssenEss Project, and runs his own independent label, Two Louder Music, under which The EssenEss Project debut (2007) was released. The EssenEss Project is currently in the process of recording their followup album, for release late 2014.

Steve’s live performance highlights include countless major support tours and headliners, as well as playing on some of the biggest and most infamous metal festivals around the world to date, including: Dynamo, Wacken, Graspop, Rock Hard, Bloodstock, The Metal Fest Chile, among many others.

Steve also had a brief foray into voice acting, with two appearances on the highly acclaimed animated series Metalocalypse, as Snizzy Snazz Bullets, the guitarist from Snakes And Barrels.

In addition to being an active private teacher with 27 years experience in one to one and group lessons and currently celebrating his 7th year teaching live lessons online, Steve also spent 3 years teaching at BIMM Brighton (2008-2011), simultaneously studying for and receiving a PGCE in music education from Middlesex University. Steve has also taught on the National Guitar Summer Workshop (US), the Metal Hammer sponsored summer schools for several music institutes (ICMP,BIMM) in the UK, and given many masterclasses around the world.

Steve is a currently a member of the guitar faculty at The Institute for Contemporary Music And Performance in London (ICMP) since 2012, where he has recently authored a course entitled Metal Rhythms, one of the Part Time courses at ICMP.

Steve filmed an artist series of instructional videos for (released June 2012), with plans to record more of these in the near future.
